Toine Thys Trio
Après 10 années de concerts et deux albums avec l'organiste Arno Krijger ("The End of Certainty', et 'GRIZZLY'), le saxophoniste bruxellois Toine Thys présente 'The Optimist' en février 2019, le troisième album de son trio (Igloo records).
Enregistré à New-York et rassemblant des grands noms du Jazz et de la musique africaine, on y retrouve deux grands musiciens avec qui le saxophoniste a souvent collaboré: le guitariste franco-sénégalais Hervé Samb (Salif Keita, Lisa Simone, David Murray, Youssoun Dour) aux guitares électrique et acoustique et le batteur canadien Karl Jannuska (Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Mark Turner, Baptiste Trotignon).
Enthousiaste et intrigué par la musique et le mélange de personnalités de ce groupe, Sam Yahel, organiste américain partenaire de Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell, Norah Jones ou Maceo Parker, rejoint l’équipe et s’approprie le répertoire avec brio.
La tournée de présentation de 'The Optimist' les a mené partout en Europe, au Kenya et en Afrique de l'Ouest.
Le trio tourne autour de l’orgue hammond et de la musique de Toine Thys dont les compositions, ancrées dans le groove, s’influencent de la musique soul ou la musique africaine. Hervé Samb, présent sur de nombreux morceaux, emmène la musique encore plus loin, soit par des accompagne- ments hypnotiques (écoutez la guitare acoustique de « Lullabye of Gounghin », première plage de l’album), soit par des solos enivrants. Parfois, les morceaux énergiques cèdent la place au mystère et à la douceur, amenés par la clarinette basse de Toine et la chaleur du jeu gospel du grand Sam Yahel.
Les compositions de Toine évoquent aussi bien des séjours en Afrique de l’Ouest (Lullabye of Gounghin ou The Optimist), qu’une fin de soirée de Carnaval à Binche (Masks & Feathers), la perte de son ami chanteur Wassyl Slipack en Urkaine (Cosmic Wassyl), ou une dédicace aux «têtes brulées».

After 10 years of concerts with his trio, and 2 cds with Hammond organist Arno Krijger ('The End of certainty' and 'Grizzly'), Brussels saxophonist Toine Thys recorded his third album, ‘The Optimist’, in New York with some major names from Jazz and African music.
Desertions, snowstorms, cancelled flights, res and calendar issues; everything seemed to go against the creation of this new album.
With unbeatable energy and optimism in the face of all the trials, Toine Thys finally managed to bring these magnificent musicians together in a New York studio to record this album.
Two great musicians with whom the saxophonist often plays are there: the Franco-Senegalese guitarist Hervé Samb (Salif Keita, Lisa Simone, David Murray, Youssoun Dour) on electric and acoustic guitars and the Canadian drummer Karl Jannuska (Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Mark Turner, Baptiste Trotignon).
Enthusiastic and intrigued by the music and mix of personalities in this group, the American organist Sam Yahel, sparring partner of Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell, Norah Jones and Maceo Parker, joined the team and stepped into the repertoire with brio.
They presented THE OPTIMIST in more then 15 countries through Europe, Africa and North America.
The trio turns on the axis provided by Thys’ Hammond organ and music. The compositions, rooted in groove, are influenced by soul and African mu- sic. The playing of Hervé Samb on several of the tracks brings the music even further, either through his hypnotic accompaniment (check the acoustic guitar on the album’s first track, ‘Lullaby of Gounghin’), or his intoxicating solos. At times, the stronger tracks make room for some mystery and gentleness, carried by Thys’ bass clarinet and the warmth of Sam Yahel’s gospel feel.
Thys’ compositions evoke trips in West Africa (Lullabye of Gounghin and The Optimist), late nights after the Carnival celebrations in Binche (Masks & Feathers), the loss of his friend and singer Wassyl Slipack in Ukraine (Cosmic Wassyl) or are dedicated to hotheads.
