ORLANDO is the Franco-Belgian quartet led by saxophonist Toine Thys (winner of an Octave de la Musique for Best Jazz Album). The group has two albums to its credit, featuring Maxime Sanchez on piano, Florent Nisse on double bass, and Teun Verbruggen on drums. Following the Octave de la Musique award received in 2021, the quartet presents in ‘Betterlands’ a tranquil, collective music, characterized by a great sense of space (Alex Duthill, 2024).
Toine Thys also uses electronics to sample his saxophone, layering and treating it across several tracks, a way to open the music up to larger sonic spaces.
Their latest album, Betterlands, is a thematic album centered on ways to make our world better. It encourages us to rethink our priorities and reimagine our societies, highlighting our deep need for a fairer world, where education—accessible to all—is of the highest quality, and where individuals show solidarity. It should be a world where consideration for others is paramount. A positive contribution to our environment, education, mutual understanding, and collaboration would then become the cornerstones of this more equitable ideal city.
